Gustie men, women take early lead at MIAC's

MINNEAPOLIS - The Gustavus Adolphus College men's and women's swimming and diving teams each lead after day one of the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships at the University of Minnesota Aquatics Center.

Men
The Gustie men got a win from Matt Stewart in the with his meet-breaking 4:29.15 in the 500 Freestyle, which saw Gustavus take four of the top five spots, and from Scott Hagemeyer in the 50 Free.

Gustavus also won the 200 Freestyle Relay in an NCAA "A" cut time of 1:22.34. Saint John's was second and St. Olaf third in the race.

St. Olaf's Nelson Westby broke a meet and MIAC record with his 1:50.96 swim in the 200 IM.

Westby also played a role in St. Olaf's MIAC record-breaking swim in the 400 Medley Relay (3:23.02). The Oles trail Gustavus by nine points.

Women
Gustavus, who won the 400 Medley Relay and finished second in the 200 Medley Relay, had a win from first year Carrie Gunderson in the 500 Freestyle to help the Gusties to a first day lead.

St. Olaf is 20 points off the winning pace in second place.

Carleton College is in third. The Knights' first year Kate Alexander won the 200 IM with a 2:09.12. Carleton also had a win from its 200 Freestyle Relay team, which won in a time of 1:38.82.

Hamline's Dana Ketcher won the 50 Freestyle with a time of 24.47.
