INDIANAPOLIS - St. Olaf senior men's cross country and track runner David Swanson earned an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship, the association announced late last week.
Swanson, a math major with a concentration in statistics, was one of 29 male fall athletes in all of Division I, II and III to receive the scholarship.
He twice captained the St. Olaf men's cross country team and was an All-Region runner in 2006 and 2007. Last fall, he qualified for the NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships.
Swanson was fifth at the MIAC Championships and 16th at the Central Regional Championships last fall. He was named the MIAC's Cross Country Athlete of the Week as well, after placing third, and tops among MIAC runners, at the Pre Nationals Meet on October 6.
Swanson, a native of Eden Prairie, Minn. (Eden Prairie High School), has spent time as an intern with the World Heath Organization, the University of Minnesota School of Public Health and was a fellow with the Center for Interdisciplinary Research. Last summer, he was a researcher at the University of Lodz in Poland.
He has been accepted for publication twice - in The 12th Symposium on the Natural History of the Bahamas and in the International Journal of Mathematics.
