Pipers top Ole men in MIAC opener 77-72

ST. PAUL, Minn. - Hamline University outlasted visting St. Olaf for a 77-72 men's basketball win on Tuesday night at Hutton Arena.

Bobby Fong led the Oles (1-1, 0-1 MIAC) with 22 points while Karl Hipp had 18 and 13 rebound to pace the Pipers (1-0, 1-0 MIAC).

Hamline connected on 7-of-15 three-pointers, while St. Olaf was just 3-of-21 from the arc.

Mitch Haugen added 13 points and five rebounds while Nate Krosschell rounded out the Oles' double-digit scorers with 12.

St. Olaf guard Joe Weber hit a three-point shot to bring the game within two, 66-64, at the 3:58 mark. Matt Christensen then brought the Oles within one, at 71-70 with 1:07 left to play but the Hipp made a jumper and Eric Clute four straight free throws to seal the win.

Clute had 13 points in the victory.

The Oles travel to Storm Lake, Iowa on Friday to play Buena Vista University before their home opener on Monday versus Luther College.
