Men's hockey over SMU

NORTHFIELD, Minn. - St. Olaf raced to a 3-0 lead and defeated Saint Mary's University 6-4 in an MIAC men's hockey game on Friday night at Northfield Ice Arena.

Roger Trousdale, Bryan Osmondson and Bryan Giordano each had a goal and an assist in the win for the Oles (11-6-1, 7-1-1 MIAC), who had leads of 3-0 and 5-2.

The win enables St. Olaf to stay atop the MIAC standings. Hamline dropped its game at Bethel on Friday leaving the Oles as the only team with one loss. Gustavus (6-3-0) moved into second place in the points standings with its win over Augsburg.

Saint Mary's made it interesting with goals from Tommy Healy and Steve Murphy to make it 3-2 early in the second period.

Giordano's unassisted goal at 17:22 of the second made it 4-2. Ben Umhoefer then scored on a feed from Giordano at 5:51 of the third to give the Oles a 5-2 advantage.

Matt Staehely and Steve Murphy brought SMU back within 5-4 with tallies at 9:33 and 17:01 of the final period.

Sam Windsor knocked in an empty netter in the final minute for the final margin.

The teams meet tomorrow in Winona in the series finale.
