No. 2 Tommies start fast, beat Oles 73-61

NORTHFIELD, Minn. - Al McCoy's 16 points helped second-ranked St. Thomas defeat St. Olaf 73-61 in an MIAC men's basketball game on Saturday to remain the only unbeaten team in Division III.

St. Thomas raced to a 23-7 lead in the game's first nine minutes and never turned back. The Tommies led by 17 at halftime and by as many as 23 in the second half.

McCoy went 7-for-7 from the field in the first half to help the Tommies build the lead. B.J. Viau added 11 points for UST, which saw 13 of its 15 players score in the win.

St. Olaf (8-8, 5-6 MIAC) was led by Mark Wieloch's 13 points and 12 from Bobby Fong. Nate Krosschell and Alfie Jaryan were in double digits for the Oles as well, getting 11 and ten points.

The loss snapped the Oles' three-game winning streak. St. Olaf hosts Hamline on Saturday at 7:45 p.m.
