Berens has big day, but second-ranked Tommies take two

NORTHFIELD, Minn. - Ali Berens went a combined 4-for-7 with a homer and three RBIs for St. Olaf, but second-ranked St. Thomas swept an MIAC softball doubleheader from the host Oles on Thursday at Mabel Shirley Field.

Game One: St. Thomas 6, St. Olaf 1
UST scored three times in the top of the sixth to extend a 3-0 lead to 6-0 and held on for a 6-1 win.

St. Olaf rallied for a run in the seventh on a Anna Begin double. The Oles' Melanie Brooks, who went 2-for-3 in the game, scored on the play.

UST was led by Missy Bruggeman's 3-for-4 effort at the plate and Angela Phillips six-inning pitching effort. Phillips allowed three hits and walked none in the victory.

Game Two: St. Thomas 14, St. Olaf 6
The Toms scored five times in the first inning and had 24 hits, including 14 from substitutes, in the victory.

Off the bench, UST had three hits each from Sarah Peters and Rachel Todryk.

Berens went 3-for-4 in the second game with a two-run homer in the first and a RBI double in the seventh.

The Oles scored three runs on a Katie Truax homerun in the sixth inning, which made it 10-5. Truax was 2-for-4 in the game, as was Ellen Larson. Larson scored twice in the loss.
