Oles win game two in extra innings to save split with UST

ST. PAUL, Minn. - The St. Olaf baseball team defeated St. Thomas 9-7 in the second game of an MIAC doubleheader on Wednesday to save a series split, after the host Tommies won the opener 2-0.

Game One: St. Thomas 2, St. Olaf 0
St. Thomas pitcher Matt Schuld threw a one-hit shutout and Louie Salmen hit a two-run homer in the fifth inning to lead UST to a 2-0 win over the visiting Oles in the first game.

Tyler Johnson had the only St. Olaf hit in the loss. The Oles' Brandon Agneberg pitched the duration for St. Olaf, scattering six hits while walking none in the loss.

Game Two: St. Olaf 9, St. Thomas 7 (8 inn.)
Tyler Jones had an RBI triple and Nick Fuerst an RBI single in the top of the eighth inning to help St. Olaf escape with a 9-7 win and series split.

St. Thomas mounted a comeback in its half of the eighth but the Oles' Erik Olson, who inherited runners on second and third with one out, retired two of the next three hitters to earn a well-deserved save.

St. Olaf led 6-3 into the bottom of the seventh before the the Tommies' Ben Wartman hit a three-run, game-tying homer.

Tyler Jones finished the game 4-for-5 with three RBIs. Carson Jones added a 3-for-5 effort in the win, which stopped UST's seven-game streak over St. Olaf.
