Oles stop skid in split with Cobbers

MOORHEAD, Minn. - The St. Olaf softball team split its series with Concordia College-Moorhead on Sunday, dropping the first game 2-0 before a 4-1 win in the second to stop the team's 13-game losing skid.
Concordia 2, St. Olaf 0 The Cobbers' Maddie Haroldson hit a two-run homer in the third and pitcher Kesley Jones held St. Olaf to three hits in complete game shutout victory.
St. Olaf pitcher Katie Truax took the loss despite a quality start. She allowed six hits and a walk while striking out six in six innings.
Haroldson's homerun came with two outs in the third.
St. Olaf 4, Concordia 1 Ali Berens went 3-for-4 with three RBIs and Ellen Larson 2-for-4 with two runs as the Oles picked up the win, the team's first since an April 4 sweep of Macalester.
Berens had a run-scoring single in the first and RBI doubles in the third and seventh.
The Oles' starting pitcher Erin Johnson went the distance scattering five hits and a walk in the victory, her second of 2009. The Cobbers' Sara Gruber hit a two-out homer in the seventh inning to spoil Johnson's bid at a shutout.
The win ended the team's losing streak, which saw the Oles fall five times by two runs or less.
St. Olaf plays at Hamline University on Tuesday.
