WINONA, Minn. - The St. Olaf baseball team used timely hitting and solid pitching to sweep host Saint Mary's University, 13-1 and 15-6, on Tuesday at the Cardinals' Max Malock Field.
St. Olaf matched a season-best 20 hits in the game one win before Erik Nelson homered twice in game two.
Game One: St. Olaf 13, Saint Mary's 1 Tyler Jones went 3-for-4 and Tyler Johnson 3-for-5 with a homer as the Oles exploded for a combined 11 runs over the fourth, fifth and sixth innings in the win.
St. Olaf hurler Alex Sommer threw a complete game four-hitter, allowing only an unearned run.
The Oles scored twice in the first inning on a Pat Wadzinski double and an RBI groundout by Todd Mathison. The Oles used four hits and a pair of singles that drove in two each -- from Tyler Jones and Mathison -- to score four in the fourth inning.
Sam Baltes also added a three-hit game for St. Olaf, while teammates Mathison, Fuerst and Carson Jones had two each.
Game Two: St. Olaf 15, Saint Mary's 6 Nelson's homers came in his first two at bats, each with the bases empty. His second shot came after the Oles' Nick Fuerst hit a three-run shot in the third inning with two outs.
Nelson was 3-for-3 while Carson Jones went 4-for-4, scored twice, stole two bases and drove in two in the victory.
St. Olaf starter Ben Hughes held the Cardinals hitless through three, and finished with a solid five-inning outing. Hughes struck out 10, allowing three hits and an unearned run.
