Baseball goes nine to sweep Gustavus

ST. PETER, Minn. - Pat Wadzinski's ninth inning double and Todd Mathison's four-hit complete game helped St. Olaf to a 3-2 win in game two and MIAC baseball series sweep of Gustavus Adolphus College on Tuesday afternoon.
Game One: St. Olaf 11, Gustavus 2 Tyler Johnson went 3-for-4 with a homer and two RBIs as the Oles jumped to a 6-0 lead and won the opener.
The Oles' Pete Loizzo allowed four hits and four walks over six innings to get the win, his second (2-2) of 2009.
Nick Fuerst was also 3-for-4 while Todd Mathison, Erik Nelson and Sam Baltes had two hits each. All of the Oles' batters had at least one hit.
Game Two: St. Olaf 3, Gustauvs 2 Mathison struck out nine, walked three and allowed only four hits in the nine-inning performance. He also drove in two of the Oles' three runs with a sac fly in the first and an RBI single in the fifth.
Sean Dube led the Oles at the plate, going 3-for-4. Carson Jones scored all three of the team's runs. He was only 1-for-4, but was hit by a pitch to lead off the ninth and reached on an error in the fifth.
Trailing 2-1, Gustavus tied the game in the sixth when Spencer Campion walked with the bases loaded and one out. Mathison then struck out the next two hitters to work out of the jam.
The sweep pulled the Oles within a game of first place St. Thomas with four games left. Tomorrow, the Oles host Hamline University at 2:30 p.m. After a non-conference series at UW-LaCrosse on Thursday, St. Olaf closes the regular season with a home series against Carleton.
