NORTHFIELD, Minn. - Alex Sommer was named the MIAC's baseball pitcher of the week and Todd Mathison the position player of the week after each helped the Oles to the MIAC playoffs championship this weekend.
Sommer allowed seven hits and two walks in a complete game shutout victory (8-0) over top-seeded and eighth-ranked St. Thomas in the MIAC playoffs championship. The performance came less than 24 hours after Sommer pitched the first four innings of the Oles' 9-4 win over Hamline. Sommer's shutout marked the first time in the ten-year history of the MIAC tournament that UST has been held scoreless, spanning 33 games. In all, Sommer allowed one earned run in 13 innings of work, striking out two while walking one.
Mathison went a combined 9-for-23 with two homers, three doubles, 12 RBIs and two walks to help St. Olaf to the MIAC playoffs championship. In Sunday's sweep of St. Thomas, Mathison was 7-for-10 with two homers, two doubles and 10 RBIs as the Oles clinched their third trip to the NCAA's in the last four seasons. His first inning grand slam in the first game set the tone for the victories.
