Oles top Carleton 2-0 to gain berth to MIAC playoffs

NORTHFIELD, Minn. - Jack Pueringer and John Zietlow each scored and Nathan Swenson had two assists to lead St. Olaf to a 2-0 men's soccer win over 23rd-ranked Carleton on Sunday, giving the Oles a berth into this week's four-team MIAC playoffs.

St. Olaf, as the third seed, will play at second-seeded Macalester in the semifinal round of the playoffs on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. St. Olaf (13-3-2, 7-3-0 MIAC), fourth in the latest NCAA regional rankings, lost a 3-1 game at Macalester on Oct. 17.

Carleton, the regular season champion and top seed in the event, will host St. Thomas on Wednesday at 2 p.m.

Pueringer's goal, on a long feed from Nathan Swenson with 7:58 left in the first half, powered by Carleton keeper Pete Semmer for the 1-0 lead.

Zietlow's score, his fifth of 2009, came with just over 27 minutes left.

The Oles' 13 wins this season are the most since the 1999 team went 17-2-1. rank as the fourth-most in school history.
