The St. Olaf alpine ski team had to battle more then the brutal mountain at the national championship meet. The Oles took on a talented field and emerged with a pair of top-10 finishes. The men fought their way into a fifth place while the women captured ninth.
On Feb. 17, Baltimore Orioles pitcher Steve Bechler collapsed due to heat stroke while practicing with the team during spring training. Bechler later died, and his death has been linked to the stimulant ephedrine, used in many dietary supplements such as Ripped Fuel and Metabolife.
For the second time in as many meets, the mens tennis team did not played their scheduled opponent. After Luther College failed to show up for the Feb. 28 meet, the Oles were told not to bother coming up to St. Thomas for their scheduled tussle. This time snow, not absence, prevented the contest from occurring.
