The 2004 Manitou Messenger staff was awarded five awards in two contests recently, one of which was first place in the General Excellence category of the Minnesota Newspaper Associations collegiate competition.

The Manitou Messenger also won first place in Best Headline Writing at the Minnesota Newspaper Associations competition, and third place in the best newspaper overall category at the Best of the Midwest competition put on by the Associate Collegiate Press. Individual awards were given to Variety Editor Molly Bayrd for a review and Executive Editor Julie Gunderson for an opinions piece.

"We have worked very hard this year to improve the quality of our writing," said Executive Editor Meg Anderson. "These honors reflect the combined hard work of everyone who has worked for the Messenger."
