Womens Golf

The unexpectedly warm spring weather was much appreciated by the womens golf team, as they started the season with a sixth place finish at the Carleton Spring Invitational. The meet took place at the 5811-yard, par 72 Northfield Golf Course, where the Knights and the Oles hold home meets.

Berit Nelson 05 led the way for the Oles, firing a first round score of 90, followed by a 92 in the final round to finish 38 strokes above par and finish in a tie for 12th place.

Stacia Polzin 04 was the next closest St. Olaf participant, swinging herself to a 21st place finish, 44 strokes above par after rounds of 90 and 98.

As a team, the Oles closed the tournament with a cumulative score of 199 strokes over par, 74 behind the winners from UW-River Falls and 69 strokes behind the host Knights, who took third.

The Oles next and final meet of the spring season is the Minnesota Womens Golf Association State Tournament set to be played Saturday and Sunday.

Mens Track

Over the weekend the mens track team participated in the prestigious Kansas Relays, an event now in its 77th year. In addition, the meet brought over 5,000 athletes, both high school and collegiate men and women, to Lawrence, Kan.

Malcolm Richards 05 was the teams top finisher, taking fifth in the 10,000 meter run with a time of 31:58.06. Indoor All-American Peter Cathcart 06 was not able to improve upon his throws from previous weeks, but finished 13th in the shot put and 21st in the hammer throw.

The 4 X 400 team managed to post a great time of 3:20.08 in winning their heat and finishing 16th. The quartet was operating without one of their regular members, but did not miss a beat thanks to star decathlete Evan Sundquist 05. Sundquist stepped up despite a heal injury and carried the baton around the track flawlessly.

Next up for the Oles are the Drake Relays Friday and Saturday at 8:00 a.m.

Mens Golf

After taking advantage of some great early spring weather by logging several much-needed practice rounds, the mens golf team finally got to face competition at the Gustie Spring Invitational.

As expected, the hosts dominated and the Oles struggled to a 13th place finish, beating only Carleton. The team posted a 54-hole score of 983, 103 strokes behind Gustavus.

Pat Gilles 05 led the way for the Oles, shooting rounds of 80, 77 and 79 to finish in a tie for 44th place. Brian Hapka 05, the teams top finisher at last years MIAC tournament, had to withdraw from the competition after posting a 36-hole score of 171.

The next match for the Oles is the last meet of the spring campaign requiring them to leave Northfield. The squad will travel to Collegeville for the St. Johns Invitational Sunday before returning home to host the Tim Cashin Invitational at the Northfield Golf Course April 29-30.
