When the St. Olaf fastpitch team approached their 2005 season with Ruthie Neuger as their new head coach, they were coming off of a 7-33 overall record for the 2004 season. Needless to say, the ladies knew that making substantial changes wouldn’t be easy.

This year, the fastpitch team took their first step toward improvement as they finished their season 14-22 overall and 7-15 in the MIAC.

The team won two of their last four games, sweeping Macalester Sunday after dropping two to St. Thomas April 28.

Pitching was the name of the game in the Oles’ season finale at Mabel Shirley Field Sunday. Laura Torgerson ‘06 and Bekki Hagen ‘06 each threw two-hitters as St. Olaf topped the last-place Scots.

In game one, Hagen notched eight strikeouts in the 4-1 win. Katie Rodd ‘08 provided the offense, going 2-for-2 with a sacrifice bunt.

In the second game, Rodd went 2-for-3 with two RBI. Torgerson struck out four batters and gave up only two singles in game two, as the Oles squashed the Scots 9-0, finishing the series and season.

Many Oles finished with high individual statistics. Emily Hennig ’08 produced a .396 batting average and 42 hits in her rookie season.

Similarly, teammate Lindsay Weier ’06 went .342 with 40 hits.

Both Hennig and Weier proved that the 2005 season was a huge improvement in terms of individual contributions. During the previous five seasons, the most hits of any player on the Ole fastpitch team was 28.

More importantly, the Oles’ 14 season wins doubled their total from the 2004 season, proving their ability to conquer some of their goals.

The Oles are already looking forward to next season, as they will again have their two starting pitchers, along with Weier, Hennig and other returning players.
