Streaking incident derails cross country

The St. Olaf men’s cross country team will not compete in this Saturday’s Jim Drews Invitational in LaCrosse, Wis., as originally scheduled, due to an incident in which members of the team ran through the Pause nude during a comedian’s performance on Sept. 28.

At about 9:30 p.m., approximately 20 males ran through the main stage area and exited the building through a door in the backstage green room.

The occurence did not garner much notice from the crowd, but the performing comedian appeared amused.

The men’s team has been suspected in numerous streaking occurances throughout the past few years, many of which have taken place in the Pause.

This incident could hold grave consequences for the 2004 MIAC men’s cross country champions, whose victory at last season’s conference meet was their first since 1976. The team will now not compete in another race before the 2005 championships, which are to be held on Oct. 29 in St. Paul’s Como Park.

“It’s a disadvantage for us [competitively] in that we’re not going to have as much racing experience as we’d like,” team captain Jason Havey ‘06 said. “But we’re just as talented and hard-working as last year, and we’ve got a good chance to repeat [as conference champions].”

The team will go almost a month between competitions after taking the previous week off as well. The men have not raced since Sept. 30 at the Blugold Invitational in Colfax, Wis.
