The St. Olaf men’s soccer team has endured a rough stretch recently, losing two of three games during the past two weeks.

On Oct. 16, Santa Cruz University got on the board early in their match with the Oles. They would not relinquish their early lead and went on to win 3-0 over the Oles.

One crucial element in the game was the disparity in shots-on-goal. The Oles had only five shots on goal, while Santa Cruz had 20, as the Banana Slugs improved to 11-1-1 on the year.

St. Olaf moved back into the win column during their Oct. 19 match against St. Thomas. Mark Zietlow ‘09 scored two goals in the 78th and 90th minutes, respectively, to lead the Oles to a 2-0 victory over the Tommies.

St. Olaf was unable to continue their winning efforts as they fell against Macalester on Oct. 22. The Scots’ Joe Wertz scored the lone goal of the game in the 15th minute, and Macalester outshot St. Olaf 20 to 5 in the Ole defeat.

Wednesday afternoon, the team played their second-to-last game of the season as they took on the Hamline Pipers in St. Paul, Minn. Senior Mustafa Dualeh's goal in the 51st minute gave the Oles a 1-1 tie.

Despite winning a share of the MIAC title last season, the Oles will not finish with a winning record this fall and cannot advance to the conference tournament.

St. Olaf end their season at home against Carleton Saturday. Kickoff is at 2:30p.m.
