Men outdueled in latest meet

The St. Olaf men’'s track team competed in the Meet of Saints, held at the University of St. Thomas on April 13.

The Oles walked away with a third-place finish out of three teams.

St. Thomas won the event, winning 13-of-20 events and totaling 233 points. Saint John'’s finished second with a score of 210 and the Oles finished with a team score of 140.

Although the team score appears lopsided, the men offered strong conpetition in nearly every event, and came away with numerous top-five finishes.

Horace Gant ‘'08 finished third in the 100-meter dash and second in the 200-meter dash. In both races, Aaron Schloer ‘'07 crossed the finish line sixth.

In the middle distances, the 800-meter race offered two solid St. Olaf performances from John Lamppa ‘'07 and Cullen O’Neill '‘09, who finished fourth and fifth, respectively.

Jesse Horst ‘'06 provided a solid showing in the 1,500-meter run, finishing third.

St. Olaf also tallied victories of their own. Distance runner Tony Hoff ‘'07 won the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 9:56:12. The 4x400 relay team composed of Dane Hamann '‘06, Andrew Gastineau ‘'07, Ryan Doyle ‘'09 and Reid Johnson ‘'09, were also victorious.

As for field events, the Oles fared respectably. All-American Pete Cathcart '‘06 won the shot put with a throw of 16.3 meters. Cathcart followed up his shot put performance with a second-place discus and hammer throw.

In the long jump, Jason Roberts '‘07 finished second.

The men'’s squad will compete in the Kansas Relays in Lawrence, Kan. April 20-22. Following that weekend, the Oles will have six meets, serving as preparation for the MIAC Championships held in St. Paul.

The Oles hope to improve upon their MIAC fourth-place indoor finish.
