The Oles were off to a quick start, utilizing a pair of doubles victories at no. 2 and 3 to move in front early before singles play began. At the second spot, Diana Baetscher '09 and Ellen Goerss '07 defeated Jamie Weber and Abby Beytien-Carlson, 8-4. The doubles duo of Sarah Carlson '10 and Aimee Ny '10 got past Susie Hallquist and Rikki Peach of St. Kate's 8-6 at the third spot. Kristina Poplavska '09 and Jorie Steffen '07 lost an 8-3 decision at first doubles.
On the singles side, conversely, the Oles failed to capitalize in several close sets and matches en route to their second loss.
St. Olaf fell victim to strong play at the top of the Wildcat lineup, as Poplavska, Steffen and Goerss all dropped matches at no. 1, 2 and 3 singles, respectively. The matches were close, as Goerss dropped a first set tiebreak to Weber before losing her second set. Steffen bounced back in her second set, but the Wildcats' Hallquist was too much. She lost 6-2, 6-4.
St. Olaf's only two victories in the singles column came at no. 4 and 6. Both Baetscher and Ny captured an unbeaten evening. Baetscher won her match with Jenna Olson 6-4, 6-1, while Ny only dropped three games, defeating Peach 6-0, 6-3.
The Oles' other singles loss was at the fifth spot in a battle of the Carlsons. St. Olaf's Carlson fought back after losing the first set to St. Kate's Beytien-Carlson, forcing a second set tiebreaker, but failed to capitalize.
The Oles, now 2-2, face Concordia Saturday in Owatonna. Match time is slated for 2:30 p.m.
