Wednesday, the St. Olaf volleyball team played their first match in a week, losing at Gustavus 3-1 (17-30, 30-25, 27-30, 26-30).

The Oles lost to a formidable St. Thomas team Sept. 12 in their MIAC opener, and rested a week before resuming conference play in full force.

Against Gustavus, St. Olaf started porrly but rebounded to win the second game before dropping two close final games.

St. Olaf's kill percentage rose in each of the first three games.

Kim Smisek '11 led the Oles with 15 kills, while Jessica Levin '09 notched 12 kills.

Alyssa Williams '10 paced the Ole defense with 22 digs, far more than any other teammate.

St. Olaf managed ten blacks as a team. All twelve players on the roster entered the match.

Coming off a 4-7 year in the MIAC (10-16 overall), the squad features no seniors, though a core of juniors and sophomores saw significant action last season. The team is so young that Williams, who played every match in her first season, is a co-captain along with Abby Fournier '09 and Jessica Levin '09.

To begin the nonconference season, the Oles played in two tournaments featuring area opponents. The tournaments, at Northwestern College and Hamline/St. Kate's, included teams from the MIAC (though results from those matches did not count in conference standings). They bested both Macalester and Augsburg, but lost to Hamline. Overall, they finished with a 5-3 in nonconference play.

Their next match is Saturday at St. Catherine. They play next Wednesday at home against St. Benedict.
