Wednesday night's MIAC volleyball showdown went to five games, but St. Olaf prevailed over Augsburg three games to two.

The Oles jumped out to a hot start, quickly trouncing the Auggies 30-15 in the first game. The women carried the momentum into the second game, and found themselves up 2-0 after a solid 30-27 victory.

However, the flow of the match shifted Augsburg's way in the following two games, countering the Oles with wins of 30-20 and 30-26.

With the match knotted up at two games apiece, the women played a tie-breaker fifth game to decide the outcome. The St. Olaf women regained their earlier composure, dominating the fifth game 15-7.

The Oles boasted a balanced offensive attack, with first-years Kim Smisek '11 and Jane Meyer '11 leading the way with 17 kills each. Jess Levin '09 spiked 13 of her own, and Paige Olson '10 added 11 to St. Olaf's overall total of 63 kills.

Key defensive digs were contributed equally as well. Of their 100 total digs, Alyssa Williams '10 posted 27, followed closely by Smisek with 21 and Abby Fournier '09 with 20.

Kelly Prunty '11 set up the majority of St. Olaf's attacks, notching 57 set assists in the match. The entire Augsburg squad combined for only 42 set assists.

With the win, St. Olaf improves to 2-5 in the MIAC (7-8 overall). This weekend the Oles head to Naperville, Ill. for the North Central College Tournament.
