Both the men's and women's tennis squads traveled to Rochester Saturday to play Luther College in a nonconference matchup, and both squads were soundly defeated 8-1 by the Norsemen.

On the men's side, Ian Pray '09 clinched the only St. Olaf win after battling back from a 6-0 loss in the first set. The match went to a tiebreaker, which Pray won 10-7.

However, juggernaut Luther extended its six-match winning streak by sweeping the remaining five singles matches and all three doubles duels.

Drew Erie '08 dropped both sets 6-2 playing in the second singles spot, while David Narvaez '09 pushed his match into a tiebreaker; but lost 10-1. Erik Brekke '08, Nick Hubbard-Peters '10 and Nick Crnkovich '09 rounded out the singles lineup.

Pray and Crnkovich teamed up to play first doubles for the Oles, but lost 8-5. Eric Brandenburg '08 joined Hubbard-Peters for the third and final doubles match.

The Oles' next competition is 12 p.m. Saturday when they play MIAC rival St. John's University at Owatonna's indoor tennis facility.

The women's team produced similar results as the men's team, facing a tough Luther team. The second doubles pairing of Abigail Ho '11 and Anna Klenke '11 scored the sole St. Olaf victory Saturday, winning the match 8-4.

The Norsemen, who are 13-2 on the season thus far, swept the Oles in singles play. Ho, Sarah Carlson '10, Aimee Ny '10, Maddy Buck '11 and Sarah Magnuson '11 each failed to win a set against their opponents.

Ida Holdahl '11 fought back from a 6-0 loss in the first set, but lost 10-8 in the third-set tiebreaker against Luther's fifth singles player.

Carlson and Ny competed as St. Olaf's first doubles team, and Magnuson and Holdahl paired up in the final doubles match.

Saturday's loss puts the women at 0-2 on the young season. Their next match is 4 p.m. Friday when they take on Carleton. The match will be played at Lakeville's indoor facility.
