The Oles' top five golfers are evenly matched in terms of playing ability, head coach Glen Peterson said. "One guy is as capable as the other in posting our best scores," he said.
Captain Tucker Weisman '08 posted the best individual result for a St. Olaf golfer competing in the conference championships since 2004, when his 226 three-day total landed him in a tie for 13th place.
Mack Traynor '09 has been the Oles' most consistent golfer, according to Peterson. Traynor placed 16th at the MIAC Championships after shooting a second-round 73.
Bror Herrick '09, Chris Conklin '11 and Bill Utter '11 also make up St. Olaf's five core players. Andrew Peterson '10 and Erik Steinmetz '08 round out the Oles' sixth and seventh golfers respectively. Recent weather has hampered the team's practice time. Still, the team's goal is to move into the top 25 teams in the nation, Peterson said.
To reach this goal, the men have a few areas to work on this spring. "Our weaknesses are our short game and putting in particular, and mental toughness in competition," Peterson said. "We need to control our emotions and focus on execution on every shot."
"We know we can compete with the best in the nation. We now have to go prove it."
