The triathlon is considered a sprint triathlon, consisting of three shorter distances of swimming, biking and running. The event consists of a 500-yard swim in the Skoglund pool followed by a 13-mile bike on Old Dutch Road and a five-kilometer run through St. Olafs natural lands. Last year, 23 women, 20 men and 13 teams competed, each team member doing one leg of the race.
Casey Baustian 08 had the winning time in the womens division last year. She is currently abroad and wont be able to compete, however.
In the mens division, staff member Eric Bergh of the Counseling Center took second place with a time of 72:40.
Berghs resume in triathlon competition is impressive. He has competed in an Ironman race in Hawaii three times and likes the St. Olaf Triathlon because it is fun and free. Bergh was one of the few staff members to participate last year.
I wish there were more staff out there, Bergh said.
The Triathlon gives athletes a chance to vary their workouts and to challenge themselves to a new kind of competition.
Its fun to see the really good swimmers and runners, Bergh said. There are always groups of swim team members or track athletes that participate. Everyone seems to have their favorite leg.
Registration for this years triathlon remains open until May 19. All St. Olaf students, staff and faculty are invited to register online at www.stolaf.edu/recreation/intramurals.
